MDCC Development Foundation Announces Two New Board Members

The Mississippi Delta Community College Development Foundation has announced the appointment of Mr. Otis Anthony and Mr. Sam Newsom to its Board of Directors.
Mr. Anthony currently serves as the State Representative for District 31 which includes Sunflower, Humphreys, and Washington Counties. Anthony is an Indianola native and son of two lifelong educators, Marva Enoch Anthony and the late Mr. Otis L. Anthony, Sr. He is a 1997 graduate of Gentry High School and from there he attended Tougaloo College from 1997-2001 pursuing a major in Political Science/Pre-Law. Anthony has been married to wife Porchia Anthony, formerly Caldwell, for 18 years.
Regarding his appointment, Mr. Anthony said, “I am here to serve MDCC in any way possible. I’m appreciative of the opportunity to serve on the MDCC Development Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation does a lot of important work in helping students overcome financial obstacles so they can obtain an education.”
Mr. Newsom has been married to wife Kay Newsom, formerly Neff, for 51 years and they reside in Greenville. They have two children and four grandchildren. Newsome is also the owner and operator of Swiftwater Sales and Service. He attended Mississippi Delta Junior College (MDJC) from 1966-1968 where he received his Associate of Arts before going on to graduate from Mississippi State University in 1968. Mr. and Mrs. Newsom established the Sam and Kay Newsom Scholarship in 2014 to help students with financial need from Washington County who are attending Mississippi Delta Community College.
“When asked to join the Foundation Board,” Newsom said, “I thought about my time at MDJC and how instrumental it was to my success. I want to be of service to the school that did so much for me. I received financial aid when I was a student at MDJC and it was the only way I was able to attend.”
MDCC Development Board Chairman Randy Randall stated, “Our MDCC Foundation Board is comprised of leaders from across the Delta who give of their time and resources on a volunteer basis, all for the good of supporting the college. I am so pleased to announce that Sam Newsom of Greenville and Representative Otis Anthony of Indianola have been selected to join our board. These two men, each from their own respective professional backgrounds, bring much value to our Board. They are both recognized as leaders and doers. They have a deep interest and commitment to MDCC and have pledged to help us do all we can in our endeavors to positively serve the school. We are so grateful for their service.”
The Mississippi Delta Community College Development Foundation provides financial support to students who are pursuing an academic university-transfer degree and those pursuing degrees and certificates in career, technical, health science, workforce, and law enforcement training.
